Our Philosophy

Our Approach to Jiu Jitsu-At RIO Jiu Jitsu we strive to emphasize the importance of constantly improving of the position of your body relative to the position of your opponent's body. We believe that Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is not a passive martial art. The Jiu JItsu fighter should not wait until his opponent makes a mistake before applying a submission hold. At RIO Jiu Jitsu, we take an active approach to training. By out maneuvering your opponent positionally, you force your opponent to make mistakes. This makes your opponent vulnerable giving you the ability to control the pace.

Personal Growth When students begin to understand the rules and goals of Jiu Jitsu, they will begin to develop their own unique style of performing techniques, the tempo of a match, the general movements, will undergo a personal change leading to an improvement in creative expression, problem solving skills and self-confidence.

Through hard and consistent training our students of Jiu Jitsu. Therefore, Jiu Jitsu is a journey of self-discovery. Like a painting or sculpture, every student’s Jiu Jitsu style will be different and typically be a reflection of that person’s life experience, personality type and body type. It is for this reason, that Jiu Jitsu is a great tool for personal growth and self-expression Each student's Jiu Jitsu style will show case the unique characteristics and physical attributes of that student. Martial Arts, after all, are vehicles of expression like any other art, be it music, painting, dance, etc.

Our mission is to: (i) spread the art of Jiu Jitsu to a wider audience; (ii) show people that through hard training, other benefits will emerge; (iii) help keep our young people on a positive road to success; and (iv) honor and pay homage to martial artists from the past that worked so hard to advance the art of Jiu Jitsu. It is our duty to do the same for future generations.
